Peacefool times

War is neither glamorous or attractive.
These words feel empty when time and again you've been slapped on the other Gandhian cheek. At the risk of sounding jingoistic, had to write these few words.

Make love not war is all I hear,
Then why do we walk this valley in fear.
Give peace a chance they protest,
Just as we put their bodies to rest.
But War is never the answer they say,
As I watch yet another soldier lay.
Oh let’s hope there’s no war ahead
Pray, ask those surviving the dead.

No, not just the soldier’s
But also every other’s

The ones who lost something to terror.
Terror not just in an army camp or an armoured van,
Terror on the streets, terror on the roads,
Terror on the trains, terror on the planes,
Shots in a hotel, blasts in a cafe.
Civilians turned to dust, plenty bodies burst.
Many homes destroyed, many families ruined.

Please go ahead and do explain,
What caused this suffering and pain,
In the times of peace as they say,
We watched many slay.

Mumbai Blasts 93, Mumbai Train Blasts, 26/11 Terror Attacks,
Delhi Bombings, Pune German Bakery Blast, Akshardham attack,
Uri Attack, Baramulla Attack, Pathankot Attack, Amarnath Yatra Attack,
Pulwama Attack     -------------   Do we put a comma or a stop here?

A Workshop Named Expressive Writing

A week ago, a friend asked me if I wanted to attend a workshop on writing and I agreed. Yeap, I am that adventurous; no details required, just sign me up! The way I look at it is, at least I get to meet some new people. Win win for me as I also get to wear some nice clothes (something apart from my usual all day bedtime clothing). Soon details started trickling in. The 1st shocker was it's not creative writing! What the fish, that's the only type I have heard of. But then the name expressive writing sounded so promising and intense. Isn't most of what we write an expression of us in that moment, even if it's in the form of OMGs or the dancing ladies. Normally I would have googled the hell out of this, but not this week. I'm happy that I didn't. Sometimes it's good to go in all blind. Without expectations it's easier not to be disappointed. After all the workshop was on a Saturday afternoon for 6hours! I would be lying if I said the 6 hours flew by ...

Can't touch that

One might not have heard of a temple called Shani Shingnapur before a group of women activist decided they wanted to enter the temple. There isn't really a ban on the entry of women in the temple (unlike Sabrimala), the ban/prohibition is for touching or offering oil to the deity. This hardly should be news. There might be 100s of temples where women are prohibited to enter where the idol is or to touch it. So my very first reaction to this was, a big SO WHAT? This is what years and years of conditioning does to you. As a woman/girl, you so often hear these words:"You can't do this", that I have probably become immune to the ones that seem frivolous to me. Yes I'm not a big worshipper. So what is the big deal here? Hinduism is really big on idol worship, if you hadn't noticed. An idol to us is a form of God, and hence the need to keep it "pure". Temple which have these bans, cite menstruation as the cause. Women are considered impure during their...

Je suis Charlie ou Je suis Ahmed ou Je ne suis Charlie! Qui suis-je?

Je suis Charlie ou Je suis Ahmed ou Je ne suis Charlie! Qui suis-je? The shooting in Paris last week that shook the world, resurfaced the modern day debate on Islam and its follower. The twitter world was flooded with the hash tag #JeSuisCharlie subsequently followed by #JeNeSuisCharlie and then finally yielding to #JeSuisAhmed. It is one of those incidents that shake you up completely. In a world probably immune to the atrocities carried out by the likes of ISIS & BOKO HARAM in bulk, shooting a few cartoonists by some loony extremists shouldn't surprise us. Even if it doesn't surprise us, it should shock us. This didn't happen in a conflict zone or in a politically unstable region. The attack wasn't carried out by an organized militant/terrorist foreign group. It is scary that in a crowded, lively city of a stable country with a decent judicial system, 3 of its citizens just decided that a certain group of people doesn’t deserve to live. What is...
