White Washed Brains

When I was 6/7, I was gifted a baby green (yes that's what I think it should be called) coloured hair clip, It was beautiful and had a pearl or two. It was a prized possession. It was beautiful, but that's not what made it so special. My neighbour aunty had got it for me from her foreign trip and hence my love for it. The behaviour continued with Taiwan returned water colour pencils, a T from US.
That was the 90s (oops did I just give away my age), when Steadler pencils were sort of a novelty in India. It's 2016 and we do get a lot more products in India. Yeap, unfortunately that also means one can't just gift those Snickers, Mars pack from their US trip anymore. (Remember the Akai TV ad)

That doesn't mean our fascination with all things phoren has ended. I don't get to watch a lot of TV ads since I prefer to waste my time binge watching recorded shows. But every now and then you see these ads of Indian products targeted for Indian junta but with white men/women. How does this white bearded cutie help sell a Micromax phone? Does he make the product hip?

This phenomenon is not just limited to ads. Pick up a brochure for any new residential construction, chances are the family is white. Myntra, Jabong have white models for ethnic clothing. For Ethnic Clothing!
What's up with all this white washing?

A Workshop Named Expressive Writing

A week ago, a friend asked me if I wanted to attend a workshop on writing and I agreed. Yeap, I am that adventurous; no details required, just sign me up! The way I look at it is, at least I get to meet some new people. Win win for me as I also get to wear some nice clothes (something apart from my usual all day bedtime clothing). Soon details started trickling in. The 1st shocker was it's not creative writing! What the fish, that's the only type I have heard of. But then the name expressive writing sounded so promising and intense. Isn't most of what we write an expression of us in that moment, even if it's in the form of OMGs or the dancing ladies. Normally I would have googled the hell out of this, but not this week. I'm happy that I didn't. Sometimes it's good to go in all blind. Without expectations it's easier not to be disappointed. After all the workshop was on a Saturday afternoon for 6hours! I would be lying if I said the 6 hours flew by ...

Je suis Charlie ou Je suis Ahmed ou Je ne suis Charlie! Qui suis-je?

Je suis Charlie ou Je suis Ahmed ou Je ne suis Charlie! Qui suis-je? The shooting in Paris last week that shook the world, resurfaced the modern day debate on Islam and its follower. The twitter world was flooded with the hash tag #JeSuisCharlie subsequently followed by #JeNeSuisCharlie and then finally yielding to #JeSuisAhmed. It is one of those incidents that shake you up completely. In a world probably immune to the atrocities carried out by the likes of ISIS & BOKO HARAM in bulk, shooting a few cartoonists by some loony extremists shouldn't surprise us. Even if it doesn't surprise us, it should shock us. This didn't happen in a conflict zone or in a politically unstable region. The attack wasn't carried out by an organized militant/terrorist foreign group. It is scary that in a crowded, lively city of a stable country with a decent judicial system, 3 of its citizens just decided that a certain group of people doesn’t deserve to live. What is...

Goa, safest I have felt in a while

I declare that the title of Paradise on Earth should be bestowed upon Goa. If not Earth, at the very least Paradise in India. What else would you call a land with coconut groves, mango trees, jackfruit trees all growing together in perfect harmony. A land with blue seas and golden sands. Lush green western ghats.  A tourist magnet for local and international travellers. Beware, skin colour might not be a very good parameter to determine residents vs tourists. Looks like Goa has achieved the impossible harmony between tourists, locals and migrants. Goa is a safe place to be in. When I say safe, I am not just referring to physical safety. It is a safe place to let your guards down. You don't need a great body, don the latest bikinis or cover your body head to toe from prying eyes. You can drink all day long or slurp up on coconut water. There is no right or wrong way to enjoy Goa.  Hike up a fort (the view from up there is stunning), laze around on the sandy beach, head t...
