Of Taxes and Ex'cess'es

कर्म करते चलो, फल की चिंता मत करो।

I am pretty certain most of us would have heard this quote from Geeta. Lord Krishna advises us to keep working without focusing on the fruits of labour in terms of success or failure.

Our governments over the years have lived by this mantra. The mantra is only applicable to the foolish working class. Keep working, keep paying taxes & don't expect any kind of social security, welfare, healthcare in return. Heck don't even expect good roads. For good roads aka national/state highways we'll add a toll tax. We also collect road tax when you buy a vehicle, but roads & parking is none of our business. Also, please pay a professional tax for the municipality separately. When you're done with that, we'll need you to pay an education cess, and no you're kids will never benefit from this. But yeah sure, we are building fantastic government schools with state of the art non existent toilets for girls with this cess. Also, we don't think you deserve any sort of happiness which can be bought, so we'll tax those through VAT, Sales Tax & Entertainment Tax. And oh you filthy lowly creature, here's Swatch Bharat Cess for you mofo.

The budget this year again does nothing to bring in more tax payers. Only 3% of the population pays taxes. And only about less than 50,000 people in this country earn more than a crore There's an additional super rich tax waiting for them. To put things into perspective, how much does 1cr mean? In Hyderabad, you can buy an apartment of about 2000 - 2500 sq feet in 1cr. Pune/Bangalore have much higher rates. So is this person with a taxable income of 1cr rich? Yes absolutely 100%. But super rich? This poor 1cr guy, wouldn't be able to buy a lower end luxury car without flinching. We need to recalibrate our scales for rich and poor alike.
If you earn more than 600 a month per person in urban India, you are considered above poverty line! So that comes upto Rs2.4k/mo for a family of 4. (21.9% people out of 1.2 billion of Indians lived below poverty line of $1.25 in 2011-2012 ). If this government is truly pro poor, move that poverty line to a real number.

PS: The budget is not all bad. Here is a snapshot.

Oops We Did it Again

What happens when you run around in circles? You get nowhere and if you're on earth a year passes by. We're back where it all started. After a round of lockdowns, aggressive tracing, testing and treating, government throwing up its hand in defeat, the virus magically diminishing from the population, we have arrived at the doorstep of another round of lockdowns. We went from tracking COVID numbers to tracking vaccinations and back to watching COVID cases quadruple every week. But this time, the government machinery is focussed on vaccinating the most vulnerable population, they might not even have the bandwidth to set up another trace, test, treat task force. But do take comfort in the fact that there won't be any vessels bangings even. On Social Media we have gone from questioning the number of cases & death reported to questioning our vaccine choices to cribbing the vaccination pace is no good and now we're again trying to find pictures of every cremation in this c...

A Picture

A picture can be a photo on your desk, a painting on your wall or maybe a movie to watch with friends. It can also be an image or an impression drawn with inks in our head. A picture can evoke emotions or stir memories, remind you of ones you longer know. It can be a time capsule of an era bygone or just a few moments ago. A picture my dear friends speaks a thousand words and still some more. This otherwise nondescript wall seems to convey the world of opposites as we know them - the dilapidated and the new! Can't touch that

One might not have heard of a temple called Shani Shingnapur before a group of women activist decided they wanted to enter the temple. There isn't really a ban on the entry of women in the temple (unlike Sabrimala), the ban/prohibition is for touching or offering oil to the deity. This hardly should be news. There might be 100s of temples where women are prohibited to enter where the idol is or to touch it. So my very first reaction to this was, a big SO WHAT? This is what years and years of conditioning does to you. As a woman/girl, you so often hear these words:"You can't do this", that I have probably become immune to the ones that seem frivolous to me. Yes I'm not a big worshipper. So what is the big deal here? Hinduism is really big on idol worship, if you hadn't noticed. An idol to us is a form of God, and hence the need to keep it "pure". Temple which have these bans, cite menstruation as the cause. Women are considered impure during their...
